Pondering the Chaos: Free Access and Zero-Value Noise

March 9, 2025

I remember talking with a friend about human behavior and how much people consume just because something is free, without it providing any real benefit to society or humanity.

I was thinking about how a web service or app might start. You design it with the idea that users won’t abuse it, won’t misuse it, and will actually create content that helps others.

In reality, instead of focusing on their own growth, many spend their lives abusing these services. This applies to mobile subscriptions with "unlimited" minutes, video hosting platforms, and so on. Their life goal seems to be consuming everything they can, like a cancer, diluting the actually useful content.

One of my discussion points was that if I created an online service and users flooded it with zero-value information, I would feel terrible and disappointed. Maybe we shouldn’t have free things, as that might be the way to stop it. If users had to pay for storage for every piece of zero-value content they uploaded, they might stop being malicious.

Today, I received a notification from Facebook telling me they’ll start deleting old live videos.

Good job!
